The Science of Radon Gas Testing: Exploring Test Kits

Radon gas is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that is produced by the decay of uranium in rocks and soil. It can enter homes through cracks in the foundation, gaps around pipes, or any other openings in the building’s structure. To determine the radon levels in a home, radon gas testing is conducted using test kits, which employ various scientific principles.

Charcoal canisters work by exposing activated charcoal to the surrounding air, allowing radon gas to be absorbed over a specified period, usually 2 to 7 days. After the exposure period, the detectors are collected and sent to a laboratory for analysis. The laboratory uses a process called etching to count the number of tracks on the plastic, which correlates to the radon concentration in the home.

Both methods follow scientific principles to measure radon levels accurately. The results are reported in picocuries per liter (pCi/L), which is the unit used to express radon concentrations. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has set an action level of 4 pCi/L, above which remediation measures are recommended to reduce radon levels.
